The tidal stretches of the River Thurso that pass through the centre of the town, are good places to watch wildfowl and wading birds. Tall sedge and reed beds fringe the river, and salmon may be seen jumping. Thurso River's most famous catch was on 23 July 1744 when 2,560 salmon were caught in one sweep of the net!
There are public footpaths along both banks. Caithness Horizons has a collection of fossil fish discovered nearby as well as a display about famous local botanist Robert Dick.
