A breakwater was erected in 1855 to help keep back the encroaching sea. Like other sections of coastline around Caithness and Sutherland various names exist for this stretch of coastline including Long Skerries, Kirk Ebb, the Crook and Little Ebb. Many of the origins of these names have been lost although it is thought Kirk Ebb origintes from a kirk which used to stand on that section of the coast before the high-water mark rose.
