Syre Church with it's distinctive red roof and white walls is a 'tin church' and was constructed in 1891 by Frederick Braby & Company, Glasgow. From 1842 to 1929 the Church of Scotland experienced a number of secessions and schisms. As a result many new churches were required and in the more remote areas it was quicker and cheaper to construct prefabricated corrugated iron buildings.
However, Syre Church was built by the Free Church as a mission church to serve the agricultural community on the Sutherland Estate. In 1900 it became United Free before joining the Church of Scotland in 1929. There is an information panel in the church grounds describing the Church's history.
The Church is close to the Clearance Village of Rosal which is also well worth a visit. Services are held on alternate Sundays but please check with the Church regarding when these are should you wish to attend.
This is part of the Strathnaver Trail which links archaeological sites Bettyhill to Altnaharra. Guide books and trail maps are available from the Strathnaver Museum.
