This graveyard is still in use and the earliest inscribed grave-slad is no earlier than the mid 19th century.
The graveyard also contains the graves of victims of a maritime tradegy. In 1858 the Norwegian Thorwaldsen ran ashore at Strathy Point with the loss of 8 people including the Captain Hans Berg and his wife Elonora. The figurehead of the Thorwaldsen and timbers from her hull, which had been salvaged and used as roof timbers in a croft house in Strathy can be seen in the Strathnaver Museum.
An archaeological site near the Strathy Churchyard shows that the valley area was occupied from the earliest times. From the site a Neolithic cup marked stone, stone axes, stone and flint scrapers, late Bronze and Iron Age pottery shards have been recovered.
