This bridge was opened on the 3rd May 1887 by the Earl of Caithness as a replacement to the first bridge built in 1800. Prior to the first bridge the only way of crossing the river was by fording it by the use of two rows of stepping stones or by boat. As far back as the 1600s there is reference to a cobble (type of open traditional fishing boat)being used to ferry parishoners to service at St Peter's Church. On the 14th March 1749 17 people were killed when the cobble capsized.
