Keiss Castle orginially belonged to the Earls of Caithness and probably dates from the late 16th to early 17th century. Built by George the 5th Earl of Caithness it once stood four storeys high with an attic. According to the Rev John Brand the castle was ruinous in 1700 and was replaced by the new Keiss Castle in 1755.
