Keiss Harbour is a picturesque harbour built in 1831 with a number of well preserved buildings associated with the fishing industry. This includes an ice house and fishing stores which have since been converted into holiday lets. The Warehouse was also built in 1831 and would have been used for the storage of fish and fishing equipment such as nets, barrels and salt.
You will also notice that some of the stones in the harbour wall are laid vertically to counteract the upward pressure of the rising tide. A similar arrangement can be seen at other harbours in Caithness including that at Castletowm.
During the herring boom of the early 19th century the harbour was a bustling port and today is still a well known landing place for several local creel boats. The harbour is also a great place to spot wildlife, with sea birds and particularly sea duck often seen off the harbour.
