Erected in 1890 on the site of an earlier fish market place, the Herring Mart, is thought to be the earliest purpose built fish market still standing in Scotland.
Crews would bring 'samples' of their catch to the Herring Mart for buyers (curers and the kipperers) to examine the quality of the fish and make their bids to buy the catch. Later it housed the offices of the Fish Salesmen who managed the sales and accounts of the fleet of Seine Net fishing boats that used the harbour following the end of the herring landings.
The building is leased to The Wick Society by the Wick Harbour Authority and is in the process of being renovated by the Soceity. It currently has an area dedicated to the history of Wick Harbour where film shows are held for visiting groups and for activties related to the Isabella Fortuna.
