The mausoleum was built by Sir John who published the Statistical Accounts of Scotland. It has a plaque on the South West bearing the words 'The burial place of the Sinclairs of Ulbster'. Before the enclosure of the ground there was said to be the ruins of a chapel which marks the spot where Earl Harold, the younger, was said to have been killed and buried at the Battle of Clardon Hill in 1196.
