The Balnakeil area is of outstanding nature conservation interest for its outcrops of Durness limestone and associated plant communities. Faraid Head, behind the beautiful Balnakeil beach, is a narrow headland with dunes, coastal grasslands and steep cliffs. A Ranger Service operates from Durness torist Inormation Centre, and advice on guided walks and areas of wildlife interest can be obtained.
