This location in Couper Park was well chosen as the location for the emigrants’ monument in memory of the people who went to the Red River area in Canada (now Winnipeg) in 1813 and 1815. The monument was unveiled on 23 July 2007 by the Right Hon. Alex Salmond MSP, First Minster of Scotland. If you look closely the man is looking bravely out to sea to an unknown future, while the woman with her baby wrapped in a shawl in her arms is looking back towards Kildonan, her homeland, in sad reflection. A matching statue, known as the Selkirk Settlers Monument was unveiled in Winnipeg in 2008.
