Brough Slipway and the nearby Storehouse were constructed in 1830 to serve as a landing place for supplies for Dunnet Head Lighthouse. The harbour is one of the best places in Caithness for seeing grey and harbour seals at close quarters, often hauled out on the slipway.
The harbour is of geological interest because of the Brough Fault, where the Dunnet Head Sandstones are separated from the Caithness Flagstone Series by a reversed fault. This is a fine, sheltered place on a windy day.
