Built in 1744 Balnakeil House occupies the site of the former summer residence of the Bishop of Caithness. Superbly situated on a mound, Balnakeil House may incorporate remains of the bishop’s residence but appears to be basically a laird’s house of the 17th century which was altered and extended the following century.
The building incorporates earlier cellars and perhaps earlier fabric in the west (rear) elevation, probably of medieval summer palace of the Bishops of Caithness.
Later the house was the occasional residence of the Lords of Reay.
