2022 is Scotland’s Themed Year of Stories and this means celebrating all our amazing stories in their different forms and sharing these with visitors and locals alike. We have a Year of Stories 2022 page on our site just for this.
Right across the country there will be themed events, festivals, sites, experiences and much more as we pay tribute to our iconic stories and storytellers, new stories, Scotland’s people and places, local tales and legends, and stories inspired by nature.
Our tales come in myriad forms and can be told in just as many ways. Caithness and Sutherland are filled with examples of stories, songs, myth and legends that teach us, enthral us and take us to new and exciting places.
Have you ridden the wild Kelpie and been plunged into the depths on its back? Did you stand there as a battle raged not knowing who would be the victor? Are there ghosts in ancient places whispering to you their tales of woe and destruction?
If you have heard these stories then you have been there in a way to all of these times. This is the power of storytelling; to transport us beyond ourselves into other lives, other times and other experiences. Teaching us through imagination and wonder.
Our storytellers are those who keep these tales and legends alive, whether that be in the form of oral or visual storytelling, writing a book, sharing a blog or podcast, providing a tour, putting on a play or many other ways. You can meet some of our local storytellers from Caithness and Sutherland on our Year of Stories 2022 page.
Why not become a storyteller yourself? Join in by sharing your favourite stories from Caithness and Sutherland throughout the year, using the hashtag #TalesOfScotland or #YS2022 on social media and tagging us so we can share.

So, let’s celebrate 2022 with our great stories, past, present and future, and use them to share our love of all things Scotland, especially Caithness and Sutherland! We know the Scottish Highlands are such a special place to visit and it’s not just because of the incredible landscapes and scenery, it’s also our wonderful people, places and stories.
